KIVA
is a Pueblo Indian word describing a ceremonial house or room where
spiritual teachings are handed down and stories are told. Kivas
are built below or above ground and may be circular or rectangular in
shape. The picture shows the rooftop opening of a below ground kiva at
Mesa Verde National Park in Southern Colorado. Click on it for more
information about kivas. We respectfully adopted the name KIVA because all
of the objects we offer for sale are made by American Indian artists
in their homes and studios,
and because we hope to offer a protected, quiet environment for
fostering the enjoyment of these arts. The Four Corners area of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah & Colorado is dotted with ruins of cities of stone built by the "Anasazi "(Navajo word for "the enemies of my ancestors") people before 1400 A.D. Many of the artists we feature are their direct descendants. We are proud to offer a full range of handcrafted American Indian arts, jewelry and traditional objects. Everything we offer is unconditionally guaranteed to be authentic under the U.S. Dept. of the Interior Indian Arts & Crafts Act of 1990, for origin, materials and tribal affiliation of the artist. A full copy of the text of the Act is available on request. Each time an item is sold, we will update our listings of items available in each gallery. Specific details about items we offer for sale can be requested thru E-mail, our phone 1(631)470-4814, or drop us a line at our Huntington, NY office. Since all items are handcrafted, no two will be exactly alike, and are subject to prior sale. We also have educational bibliographies and information sheets available. Ask us about our collectors' seminars which are available to groups and institutions. We also offer excellent repair services for all American Indian handmade crafts. Collectors will appreciate our personalized locator service to secure hard-to-find items from specific artists, if available. Special Gift Services provide personal gift registry and matching. Discussion topics are covered within our F.A.Qs pages, including a frequently consulted American Indian cultural Symbol Dictionary. |
