Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico, lies about 35 miles South of Santa Fe.
It is the home of a number of distinguished crafts traditions which have
withstood centuries of European influence.
Today, the traditional jewlery crafts of these Keres-speaking
people remain the closest in form to pre-Columbus jewelry-making in the Southwest.
Using stone such as turquoise or jet; and shell, the families of the Pueblo
shape and cut fine strands of beads, tab earrings(from thin slabs of stone
or shell) and mosaic inlay jewelry strictly by hand. Some of these strands
can contain individual shell, or coral beads worked as small as 1/32" in
diameter cross-section.
Originally the colors and form of the jewelry was limited by
the materials available locally or through their early trade contacts with
neighboring cultures to the South in Mexico and Central America. Today,
these art forms have blossomed through the addition of some modern tools,
adhesives and access to many new sources of raw materials. "Heishi" (he-she),
a Keres word for shell, today often stands generically for this wonderful,
traditional Southwestern Jewelry style, although not all heishi available
for sale is authentic Santo Domingo Pueblo handmade. Imported heishi can
be purchased in bulk from jewelers' supplies. Kiva is proud to offer only
authentic, handmade Heishi, mosaic and tab jewelry from the artists of Santo
Domingo Pueblo.
